Your duties

Ratepay is looking to hire TWO Platform Engineers to add value to our constantly evolving technology team during one of the most exciting parts of our tech roadmap!
As a Platform Engineer, you will be instrumental in building and maintaining a robust, scalable, and efficient software platform, and someone who brings expertise in infrastructure design, automation, cloud computing, scalability, security, and troubleshooting to ensure the smooth operation of our applications and services.
Ratepay has begun a major cloud migration which is one of our largest, most complex and most exciting technology projects to date, and the good news is that you’ll be part of this from an early stage! It’s a major initiative involving migrating over 100 micro-services and a large number of databases from our on-prem datacentre to AWS. After this, another major project is developing a machine learning platform for training anti-fraud and risk models. Needless to say, it’s a very exciting time to join us!

The role and your key contributions 

  • Automation: You’ll be well-versed in streamlining the software development lifecycle through automation and collaboration using tools such as Ansible and involvement with CI/CD pipelines 

  • Cloud & virtualization: You’ll offer expertise in AWS  and Virtualisation and optimize our infrastructure for cost-efficiency, scalability, security and high availability, managing mainly cloud but also some on-prem areas. 

  • Scalability: Our applications will grow and have to handle increased traffic, so you’ll ensure our infrastructure can handle the load. Setting up auto-scaling mechanisms, performance monitoring, and load balancing to maintain a responsive and performant system is part of the daily work.

  • Security: You will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. Configuring firewalls, setting up secure access controls, VPC's, Secrets Management and so on.  

  • Troubleshooting: When issues arise with our application infrastructure you will investigate, diagnose and implement solutions to minimize downtime and disruptions.

  • Support SW engineering teams to migrate and operate applications in the cloud
  • Documenting platform architecture and processes
  • Evaluating and integrating new technologies and tools to improve the platform

Your profile

Essential skills
  • AWS  - our main infra’ platform
  • Terraform  - to deploy our infrastructure as code
  • Ansible (OR SIMILAR) - config management and automation 
  • Linux/On-Prem exposure  - We still have Linux VMs we have to maintain
  • Networking - to understand communication between different infra’ areas 
  • GIT / CI/CD - All changes should be deployed via CI/CD pipelines
Bonus skills
  • JIRA/Confluence/Bitbucket - for daily work in our agile environment.
  • VMWare - the base infrastructure of our legacy platform.
